David Benavidez says he expects former Cuban amateur star David Morrell peel at his feet after he beat him on February 1, admitting that the “Mexican Monster” “is the best” after he administered a beating at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The “Respect” Prophecy.
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) says ALL of his opponents follow the same formula where they talk trash endlessly, saying he’s a “bum,” has “no defense,” and is a limited fighter coming in. they sing a different tune, slathering it with compliments.
What Benavidez didn’t point out is that the guys he fought throughout his long career were smaller guys, like Demetrius Andrade, Caleb Plant, David Lemieux, Anthony Dirrell and Ronald Ellis. Those were the best Benavidez fought before making the jump up to 175 last June.
“I have nothing. I’m a bum. I’m a RoboCop. It’s good that he thinks that,” David Benavidez told Boxing News that David Morrell sees him as a second-rate fighter. “And you better not have any excuses after I get kicked out in front of your own people.
“What are you going to say? You’re going to say that David Benavidez is the best. Like you and everyone else I’ve fought before. They say the same thing. After getting in the ring with me, it’s a whole different story. You have to see too,” Benavidez said.
That sounds sick. As you can see, the interim WBC light heavyweight champion Benavidez has created a completely unrealistic cartoon in his head. The fight is more likely to play out the other way around, with Morrell winning and Benavidez later saying, ‘How could I be so wrong?‘
Morrell’s power
It will be interesting to see if Benavidez, 28, can get away with fighting with the same style he did at 168 when he steps into the ring with Morrell, who is a monster puncher with either hand.
Benavidez may not last long against Morrell in the fight as he did in his last three contests, especially against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. Morrell will hit too hard and drill holes through Benavidez if he tries to overwhelm him with volume like he did against the 37-year-old Gvozdyk.
