David Benavidez believes that David Morrell was trying to hurt him to get out of his fight when he threw his heavy regular WBA lightweight belt after he pushed him in the face on December 17 in Miami. Benavidez seems paranoid about the injury scenario he has formulated.
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) became angry when Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) refused to shake his hand. Then, to deal with his shame and anger, he showed Morrell, who returned with his WBA belt. The belt just missed Benavidez in the head. He interpreted this move by Morrell as him trying to get out of the fight by hurting him.
You can see it the other way. Benavidez was the one trying to knock Morrell out of the fight, hoping he would punch him in the face in return. It was Benavidez who started with the back. What did he expect Morrell to do?
Was Morrell afraid?
“I really want to beat the crap out of Morrell, and that’s exactly what I intend to do,” David Benavidez said Fighthypealways complaining that David Morrell didn’t want to shake his hand during his media training.
“For me, I already know that he’s 100% afraid of me because he’s already looking for a way out. Who throws belts in someone’s face? That’s a heavy belt, bro,” said Benavidez as Morrell threw his belt WBA world title to him during his face after he was pushed hard without warning.
“For me, throwing that belt in your face, I know in my mind that I will hit you, and the fight will be canceled because you will be cut. That’s exactly what he did. He also aimed at my head. He didn’t try to miss ” Benavidez said.
Benavidez started
There wouldn’t have been a problem if Benavidez had controlled his violent instincts when Morrell didn’t want to shake his hand. Do you go through life pushing everyone when they don’t want to shake your hand?
“From the first press conference when we did the face, I had fear in him,” said Benavidez about Morrell. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, and the same thing with this. I said: “Be careful what you ask because I could be here to give you.
“This makes it a better fight. I did all that. I pushed him. I did the press conference, and now a lot more people are interested in this fight. They should be because this is going to be a good fight. David Morrell is a good fighter .I am a great fighter.
Will Morrell commit?
“We’re going to war, and if he’s really about what he says, he’s going to stay here and go toe-to-toe with me. I don’t think he’s going to do it. I’m 100% ready to go in here and do. I’ll do that guy as much as I can,” said Benavidez.
It might not work in Benavidez’s favor to stay on top of a big puncher like Morrell because he hits a lot harder and takes advantage of all the punches he tends to throw.
Benavidez’s punching volume worked for him at 168 against the smaller, older and weaker fighters he had faced. But at 175 years old, he has to reinvent himself if he doesn’t want his career to implode, starting with the Morrell fight.
