Ayuso has decided to give Milei the International Medal of the regiona controversial decision in the midst of the growing tensions between the national governmentled by the socialist Pedro Sánchez, and the conservative opposition.

During his visit, Milei will not meet with the President of the Government or the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares. However, the Argentine president requested an audience with the head of state, King Felipe VIbut was rejected by the Royal House.

Upon arrival in the Spanish capital this Friday, Milei also received another medal. This is an award from the Juan de Mariana Institute, a liberal entity, which has awarded it to the president for an “exemplary defense” of the “ideas of freedom”.

Can Ayuso award this medal to Milei on an unofficial visit?

However, Milei’s unofficial visit has caused great controversy in Spain. The left-wing party Podemos has decided to send a letter to the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to express “deep concern” for the awarding of the International Medal of the Community of Madrid to Milei.

In the letter, the party accuses Ayuso of “using” public institutions to legitimize the Argentine president and asks Von der Leyen to “intercede” to “guarantee the rights of the social majorities in that country.”

Furthermore, several political parties and journalists They have questioned the legality of Ayuso’s decision to award this medal to Milei. In the decree itself, published in the Official Gazette of the Community of Madridstates that the recognition “will be granted as a gesture of courtesy and as recognition and respect of the citizens of the Community, to the representatives of other countries (…) on official visit to the Region for their institutional work”, something that is not the case with this trip.
