The judges agreed on the final score for Saturday’s match between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury – 116-112 for Usyk across the board – but the routes each took to get there were very different.
Gerardo Martinez, Patrick Morley and Ignacio Robles settled for just seven of 12 rounds.
– Rounds 4 and 5 for Fury
– Rounds 6, 7 and 8 for Usyk
– Rounds 10 and 11 for Usyk
The rounds they disagreed with were rounds one, two, three, nine, and 12:
– Round 1: Martinez and Morley to Fury; Robles gave it to Usyk.
– Round 2: Martinez and Morley to Usyk; Robles gives it to Fury.
– Round 3: Martinez and Robles to Usyk; Morley gave it to Fury.
– Round 9: Martinez and Morley to Usyk; Robles gives it to Fury.
– Round 12: Morley and Robles give it to Usyk. Martinez gave it to Fury.
If we take the score from “majority rule” in which a boxer has the advantage of at least two out of three judges in that round The final score would widen further, 117-111, or nine rounds, to three, with Fury in the majority in the first round and sweeping the fourth and fifth places.
In actual totals, Fury had a slight lead after five rounds, 49-46 on Morley’s scorecards and 48-47 on Martinez and Robles.
But then the tide turned:
– Martinez gave Usyk the win in the 6-11 round, but lost in the 12th round.
– Morley had Usyk win every round from the sixth round until the end.
– Robles had Usyk win the round 6-8, lose the 9th round, then win the round 10-12.
