Eddie Hearn isn’t intimidated by Tyson Fury’s loss last Saturday night to Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh, saying the Gypsy King showed he’s STILL on the “At the height of his powers, “ and he wants to talk with Turki Alalshikh to make a fight between Tyson and Anthony Joshua next.
The last day of payment
Hearn wants to stage two fights between AJ and Fury, one at Wembley and one in Riyadh. Trying to sell a Fury vs. Joshua to the public, with both coming off losses, looks desperate, as both are trying to get one last pay day from the fans.
British fans still bought the fight in high numbers, but it would not be popular in the US market, as fans would see it as a cash grab between two washed-up fighters who had never fought the guys solid during his career. Both were manufactured fighters who made a career out of beating a 40-year-old Wladimir Klitschko. That was the high point for Fury and Joshua.
They are already rich, and it seems pathetic to make this fight now. It’s too late in the game without them coming back to get some solid wins against premier heavyweights like Martin Bakole and Daniel Dubois.
Hearn says Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) didn’t look “poor,” and saw the fight as a draw. However, Fury lost by unanimous decision in 12 rounds, and the fans did not think he had won, nor did they see him at the “peak of his powers”. It seemed below average for him, but he was never great, even at the best of times.
The “Only” Fight
“Usyk-Fury tonight, but the reality is that there is only one fight for Tyson Fury, and that is Anthony Joshua,” said Eddie Hearn to DAZN Boxingreacts to Fury’s loss to Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday night.
“It’s the biggest fight in the history of British boxing. Everyone wants to see it. By the way, it wasn’t a Tyson Fury that looked finished. It wasn’t a flat performance. It wasn’t a bad performance. It didn’t look gunshy. It didn’t look like his punch resistance was in question as we spoke,” said Hearn, trying to put a positive spin on Fury’s inept effort in his loss last night against Oleksandr.
“So, I think Tyson Fury potentially is still at the peak of his powers. He’s not good enough to beat Oleksandr Usyk tonight, but for me, AJ against Fury is the one at Wembley (London Stadium), and then come back here (for the Fury-Joshua rematch) for Riyadh Season. I’m going to push His Excellency (Turki Alalshikh) to do the fight, but that’s another maybe for another day,” Hearn said.
Fury looked washed out last night against Usyk and lost to several other heavyweights in the division. If Hearn doesn’t make the Joshua-Fury fight now, it will be too late because neither can beat the top five heavyweights.
Usyk looked far from great last night, but he was still too good for Fury. As for Joshua, he can no longer take a punch and is only safe as long as Hearn protects him with his matchmaking.
