Come December 21, from the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, unified WBA / WBO / WBC and lineal world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk will have an immediate rematch against the former champion of the world Tyson Fury.

Not too long ago, in 2018, we had a unique and historically unprecedented situation in the history of heavyweight boxing. Anthony Joshua was the undefeated IBF/WBA/WBO unified heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder was the undefeated WBC heavyweight champion, and Tyson Fury was still the reigning world champion.
Three undefeated heavyweights, each of whom had a legitimate claim to calling themselves heavyweight champion. It was an exciting time for the heavyweight division, and the expectation was that Joshua, Wilder and Fury would all have a handful of matches between the three. But this did not happen. Fury and Wilder had their era-defining epic trilogy, and that was it. To date, AJ has not fought the other two.
In recent years, AJ and Wilder have fallen off the radar, now both clearly outside the Top 3 where they stayed for so long. In that sense, Tyson Fury is the last man left from his era. Usyk has since emerged as a heavyweight force, but was not a true contemporary of the other three, where Usyk spent most of the Fury-Joshua-Wilder era as a cruiserweight.
Fury himself ushered in the new era, when he defeated long reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, which officially marked the end of the Klitschko era (which lasted roughly from 2004 until the night Fury dethroned Wladimir).
Will a Fury win allow the era to live to see another day? Or will Usyk put the final nail in the coffin?
