Fans and promoters say that Devin Haney should get busy with his career and stop standing on the sidelines after his loss last April. He lost a 12-round majority decision to Ryan Garcia in an April 20 bout in Brooklyn. This defeat seems to have taken something out of the former two-division world champion.
A year on the side
Bill Haney said this week that he has “Big news” coming soon for Devin’s next fight, but gave no hint as to who it might be or what weight class. If Devin moves up to 147, he could fight for a world title against WBC champion Mario Barrios or WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis.
IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is interested in fighting those guys, but has been too slow to make the fight. Bill will move quickly to make it happen if that’s where he wants Devin to go.
Promoter Eddie Hearn feels it is important for Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) to return to action, noting that he will be out of the ring for almost a year when he returns.
Not a good thing for 26-year-old former two-division world champion Haney if he wants to stay strong. Haney is losing a lot of money to stay out of the ring, and he could already defend against Sandor Martin and fight IBF champion Liam Paro in a unification.
“He needs to move”
“We’ll see what Devin does next. For me, I think he needs to move. He fought in April. Now it’s December. He’s not going to fight in January. He’ll be out for almost a year when it’s all said and done,” said Eddie Hearn to iFL TV about Devin Haney being inactive since his loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20th. “I’d love to see Devin back in the ring. I think he’s a tremendous talent.”
