Promoter Oscar De La Hoya roasted Devin and Bill Haney during this week’s Clap Back Thursday, ridiculing them for suing his company, Golden Boy Promotions, and Ryan Garcia based on the fight earlier this year on the 20th ‘April. The Haney’s are suing Ryan Garcia for breach of contract over his positive test for the PED Ostarine.
De La Hoya says Haney wants “Money that doesn’t exist” as he claims the fight with Ryan only caused 300,000 PPV buys. That’s a lower number than many expected because of the tremendous hype going into the match. Ryan’s huge social media following didn’t help the PPV numbers for the fight, and that’s the weird part. They chose not to buy this fight in large numbers.
Ryan’s strange behavior during the buildup, which made him appear unhinged, gave some boxing fans the perception that the fight would be a mismatch. That could have affected pay-per-view success. In retrospect, it would have been better if Ryan had acted like his normal self. Haney was a clear favorite based on his improved resume, which includes wins over Regis Prograis, Vasily Lomachenko, Jorge Linares and Joseph Diaz.
De La Hoya sounds like he wants Bill and Devin to drop their lawsuit instead of going to court, but it doesn’t look like they’re doing that.
“A few weeks ago, the Haneys filed a lawsuit in the state of New York for battery, fraud and breach of contract,” said Oscar De La Hoya in his Clap Back Thursday post on social media media.
“They don’t believe the fact that Garcia vs. Haney did just a little over 300,000 houses, and they were paid what they were owed. They want more money that doesn’t exist. Number one, Bill, we live in the same posh neighborhood in Henderson (Nevada). You could drop by my table and just ask to see my books. We’ve told you over and over that this fight isn’t for sale.
A rematch between Haney and Garcia might not be worth it, given the disappointing numbers for their previous fight on April 20. Ryan would be better off fighting Gervonta Davis in a rematch or fighting Teofimo Lopez or Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. Ryan is popular enough to fight anyone and put up good numbers.
