Devin Haney with Limited Options

Devin Haney blew his chance for a rematch with Ryan Garcia by punching him, and if he doesn’t retire, he’ll have limited options for his next fight.

The big paydays that Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) wants aren’t there without avenging his loss to Ryan, and that opportunity has gone out the window now with his decision to start a lawsuit against him. He needs to avenge his loss, but he can no longer do so because of his decision to sue.

Before the trial, Garcia had expressed interest in giving Haney a rematch to let him have a chance to recover, but no more. On social media last night, Ryan shut down the possibility of Haney getting a lucrative rematch against him by saying it didn’t happen because of his lawsuit.

Haney’s market value It seems to have gone down, as we saw with the low purse bid of $2.24 million for his title defense against his mandatory WBC light welterweight Sandor Martin.

Devin chose not to accept that fight due to the tiny offer won by Top Rank, and was made “Champion in recess” with the WBC.

If Haney chooses to continue his career, he will likely have to move up to welterweight because he is too big to compete in the 140 lb division. His disastrous performance against Ryan on April 20 may have partially resulted from the weight loss.

For fighters like Haney, who repeatedly drop massive amounts of weight to compete in a division far below their size, something eventually has to give.

Haney’s options at 147

-Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis
Mario Barrios
– Brian Norman Jr.
– Conor Benn
– Eimantas Stanionis

These are all tough fights for Haney and ones he could lose. It wouldn’t be wise for Haney to mess with Boots because that would be a step too far for him. If promoter Eddie Hearn is interested in paying Haney well to fight Conor Benn, this would be an excellent and winnable fight for him.

Benn’s Superman powers have disappeared in his last two fights, and he now looks just as deadly as he was before his sudden ascension several years ago. Haney would have a good chance of beating Benn if Hearn is willing to pay big money to make it happen. Hearn might want to save Benn for Chris Eubank Jr. because that match will eventually be a big one in the UK.
