Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is stuck in a dead welterweight division with zero notable fighters that the boxing world is interested in watching him fight.
Boots’ social media reach is non-existent, and he is not a charismatic fighter who can excite fans to see him fight like other less talented boxers do by talking trash. Unfortunately, this does not change.
The 27-year-old Boots will never be a fighter full of personality that creates the kind of interest that Ryan Garcia does with his interviews and posts on X.
Unlike most fighters, Ryan works hard by appearing and giving interviews, and it pays off for him with 12 million followers on social media. Those followers can be counted on to buy PPV events, and that’s what Boots Ennis needs.
Therefore, Boots needs some trick that can attract publicity and attract interested fans to follow him, not only for particular fights, but every day. Ennis and other fighters don’t like having gimmicks to sell their fights, but that’s how it is in any sport.
Gimmick ideas
- Invite a hype person: Ennis needs a Bill Haney type of hype man who can talk to him, do interviews. Boots and his father, Bozy, are not charismatic enough to fulfill this role. What they need is someone like Bill who can connect with people.
– Social media: Hire someone who can post 5 to 10 times a day on X and Instagram. - Be conspicuous during the fights: Since the opposition that Boots has to fight at 147 is poorer, he will make his fights interesting to see in a Naseem Hamed.
- Create a character for your personality: Taking acting classes to develop a character that can help engage fans.
Ennis (32-0, 29 KOs) is determined to stay at 147 despite the division’s lack of quality opposition. If Ennis moved up to 154, it could help his career and he wouldn’t need a marketing gimmick to get fans interested in him, but he won’t do that. He will stay at 147 stubborn and languid.
His promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently failed to put together a unification fight against WBO champion Brian Norman Jr. and then loses a purse for her mandatory IBF fight Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9. This fight will not help Boots’ career and may even hurt him unless he can create interest with a marketing gimmick.
