Residents of Terézváros, Budapest’s sixth district, will go to the polls to vote on a ban on short-term rentals on Airbnb.
The inhabitants of the Hungarian neighborhood of Terezvároslocated in the country’s capital, will vote in a referendum to decide whether the short-term rental company should be banned Airbnb operate in the district.
Approximately the 7% of homes of the popular party district, which is equivalent to 2,200 properties, are currently used as short-term accommodation. Critics say that while the vacation rental business generates annual revenue for the district, it also drives up housing prices.
The mayor of the sixth district of BudapestTamas Soproni, said that there is no defined threshold of votes to give the green light to the proposal, but that at least they are needed a few thousand upvotes to persuade the local government that it should take the issue seriously.
