Fidesz MEP Balázs Győrffy resigns after drunken argument turned violent with woman

Hungary’s ruling party, Fidesz, said in a statement that “there is no excuse” for the behavior of MEP Balázs Győrffy.

Balázs Győrffy, MEP from Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party, has resigned from his seat after a violent argument with a drunken woman.

Győrffy announced on Friday that he was “resigning from all public positions” and left Fidesz, the party that has governed Hungary for 14 uninterrupted years under Viktor Orbán.

“I have failed and therefore I take full responsibility and consequences,” Győrffy announced in a statement on your Facebook account.

He adds that he no longer has a place in public life and that he will accept any legal consequences of his actions.

In a post On Facebook, Fidesz – which is represented in the European Parliament by 11 lawmakers, including Győrffy – said: “Fidesz has clear norms and values, and anyone who violates them cannot be a member of our community“.

“The representative of the European Parliament Balázs Győrffy got into a drunken argument with a woman last night, and the argument became violent,” the statement added. “There is no excuse for Balázs Győrffy’s behaviorwho acts in such an irresponsible and unacceptable manner, must leave our community immediately.”

Fidesz prides itself on promoting so-called “traditional” Christian values, including conventional family values. Győrffy’s fall from grace occurs less than three months after he was elected Member of the European Parliament in the June European elections.

He has also left the presidency of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture (NAK), which he had presided over since 2013. This is not the first time that a Fidesz MEP has been forced to resign due to misconduct.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fidesz MEP József Szájer resigned after being caught by police attending what was described as a gay sex party in Brussels where locks were broken. Prosecutors said they found him with drugs in his backpack when he tried to flee, apparently sliding down a sewage pipe.

Fidesz has been criticized for years for its hostile policy towards the LGBTIQ+ community.
