A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has shaken the south of Japan, the authorities have warned of a possible tsunami reaching the coasts.
Japan Meteorological Agency reported that he earthquake registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 and has reached 7.1 and had its epicenter off the eastern coast of the main island of Kyushu, south of Japanat a depth of about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).
The Government issued a tsunami warningpredicting waves up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) along the southern coast of Kyushu and the nearby island of Shikoku.
Operators at the Kyushu and Shikoku nuclear plants said they were checking for damage. Japanese public television ‘NHK’ said there were reports of broken windows at Miyazaki airportnear the epicenter.
Japan is located in the Pacific Ring of Firethe seismic fault line that surrounds the Pacific Ocean, and is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. The earthquake of January 1 in the Noto regionin north-central Japan, caused more than 240 deaths.
